The only way to be an expert is to call yourself an expert

May 28, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

I'm running around tying up loose ends before this weekend, when I head off to Spain for some family hang-time, and then straight onto Chicago for some wedding action. It's been utterly brilliant to be in Berlin for so many weeks in a row -- but let's face it, my heart belongs to WH Smith.

Recently, I've been talking a lot about titles. I'm sure you've all heard of imposter syndrome, which is a real and legitimate thing for everybody I know. Whether you're getting a fancy new promotion, starting out on a new career path, or just flat-out starting, you have to decide what you're going to call yourself.

On music and experience and hacking your own skillset

May 20, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Me again. Today is the launch day for my (hypothetical!) upcoming album, The Human Jukebox Project. If you click on that link, you can learn all about the project in detail. If you'd like to participate (and vote! and come to a Pop-Up Party!), I am sending you a big, fat thank you for that right this very second.

It's been a musical day all around, for me. Aside from Kickstarting, I also got to rehearse with some super talented musicians for a private party gig we're doing in this crazy, mirrored secret room on Friday night.

I mentioned yesterday that part of the reason I am doing Kickstarter is to gain experience on the platform. It's true. I've hacked my way into a lot of the skills listed on my CV. Here are a couple other examples:

It's going to be like Survivor meets American Idol meets the Jerry Lewis telethon

May 19, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

I know, I know, it's only Tuesday. But it is Kickstarter central over here, and I wanted to quickly fill you all in on what's going on for me this week. As some of you know, I've decided it's time to record another album. I'm calling it The Human Jukebox Project.

Why another album? Because I'm a singer. It's like, my main keyword. It is part of me. It's as real to me as my middle name. (Which is Lawton, by the way. A name I've found you can really pronounce properly with a British accent.) I wear a lot of hats, and I'm cool with that. But singing, for me, is something I just can't ever give up. I wouldn't make sense without it.

I just put a hard ban on To Whom It May Concern

May 13, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Holy moly, this has been a day. I filmed #entrylevelboss Episode 6 this morning, filmed the explainer video for my #thehumanjukebox Kickstarter album this afternoon, got thrown into a last-minute project, and just came back from hanging out at Kickstarter's German launch cocktail party. I even worked out! So, high-fives for everybody, and especially for those who also felt super productive today.

As we know, I've been chatting for the last couple of weeks about how to improve your communication, and get straight to what it is that you really want or need. I know I've helped some of you so far, which feels pretty gosh darn great -- but I don't want to leave any rock unturned or any assumption still assumed, so I'm going to break it down a bit further.

Come back later, I'm in too truthful a mood

May 6, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

The gloves (and jackets) are coming off this week in Berlin. It's been hot and muggy, and there's a public transportation strike happening, so half the town is feeling really vibey, transitional, contemplative, and sweaty. The other half is racing around all over the place going to #BerlinWebWeek events and conferences -- yours truly included. Trivia fact for you: I moved to Berlin 368 days ago, purposefully for the start of #BerlinWebWeek 2014. So, I'm a little reflective on this fine Wednesday.

As I flit from conference to talk to dinner to meeting this week, I've been reminded again about how many incredible entrepreneurs I get to see on a day-to-day basis. They're all doing cool stuff. I'm talking fashiontech. Gesture-based interfaces. Artisan mobile coffee shops. Uber for adult entertainment (yes, really). My friends do excellent, weird, exciting things with their days.
