How your selfie game gets you hired

Hi friend,

Important announcement: I’ve decided you need to get good at selfies.

Let me finish.

See—I’m good at my eyebrows, good at selfies, good at spinning a personal narrative, good at explaining my work to others, good at telling people what I want from them, good at telling you which problem I’m solving.

I know all of this about myself. And I am perfectly OK with communicating it out loud, succinctly, like I just did just now.

People hate selfies.

The 4th anniversary of escaping a bad fit

Hey friend,

Today's a really important day for me. It's my Berlinnaversary! Four years ago today, I landed in Berlin for the first time.

Now, if you're new here, I know what you're thinking: "But you live in London...?"

And to that, I say: Yes, you're correct.

But that's also not important. Because, friend, a Berlinnaversary is not just about Berlin.

It's about escaping a bad fit. It's about listening to your own instincts. It's about accepting that what's right for other people might not be right for you.

I'm sure you know what I mean.

Putting side hustle stuff on resumes

Hey friend,

Writing from the bar at Soho House Barcelona tonight. I just landed, and I'm in town for the next four days for this very cool conference called IAM Weekend 18. It's gonna be a quirky mix of people, weird academics and crazy artists and thoughtful entrepreneurs, talking all about the future of the internet for three days

I'll post about it all over Instagram, so follow me there and check in on my Stories.

And since I'm writing this newsletter from a bar at 10PM on a Thursday, I figured it's high time I talk about how to explain 'side hustles' or 'side projects' or 'un-official' work of any kind on your resume/CV.

So, you're gonna follow your dreams

Hey friend,

Back in California for work this week. Super jetlagged, but writing this newsletter to keep my eyeballs open for a few more minutes so that I can ultimately go to sleep at an appropriate hour.

Before flying west, I spent the most delightful Sunday in this gorgeous empty coworking space to get interviewed for a London-based podcast called The Work We Do.

Victoria and I explored our thoughts about entrepreneurship in the interview, and I wanted to share some of those thoughts here.

I know I don't talk about entrepreneurship very often in this email.

The birthday game

Hey friend,

It's my 29th birthday today.

I can never decide how to 'reflect' best on days like this -- and then I get stressed out about how maybe I'm doing reflecting wrong, which ruins whatever reflection I was hoping to achieve, and blah.

Luckily, just as I was starting to write this note to you just now, I checked my Insta DMs and saw a suggestion from my BFF: "Make a list of the top 5! Play the birthday game!!"

Genius idea, Car. Great timing, too. Thanks. Sold. Yes. Let's do the birthday game.

The birthday game is a thing in her family. It's not really a game, it's just a really good conversation topic for birthday dinners. As tradition goes, whosever birthday it is has to name the top 5 best moments of the last year.

So, without further ado, let's play.
