Tour Diary, Day 2

October 8, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

It's the first day of my (micro) tour! I'm on the ground in Philadelphia and already showered and working at the nearest coffee shop. An upside of jetlag if there ever was one. It's only my second time ever in Philly, so I'm feeling a little foreign. I've got rehearsals tomorrow and then the next gig is on Saturday night. I'm creating a little pop-up show at this 'industrial chic' photography studio. We'll grab some wine and paper cups and go play some tunes.

I also finished shooting the first big-scale music video over the weekend. (You can check out the behind-the-scenes photos here.) The day after filming, I had myself a little freak out. The gist of it, of course, was this:

What is even the point?

To answer, I shall share with you this little story.

How to answer the world's most dreaded question

September 30, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Hooboy, my October tour for #thehumanjukeboxproject is all the sudden just one week away. And I actually seem to have everything under control, more or less. If you're going to be in Philadelphia on October 10 or Chicago on October 16, you are personally and officially invited to come hang out.

And *before* that, I am singing at a charity concert at Factory Berlin tomorrow, and shooting my first big-scale, I-even-have-a-hair-and-make-up-girl music video on Sunday. Creation, baby! Lots and lots of creation.

I was at a techie event a couple months ago and did some casual, networky chatting before the speaker started. I was telling this potential client/person about my content strategy work withThe Dots Creative, and we were definitely vibing on a business level. And then he asked me that question.

Three things that make you look way more legit

September 24, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Yesterday, I watched this super rad interview with Elizabeth Gilbert, the writer. She talks about her relationship to work after achieving the highest success possible in her line of work: writing a book so big that Julia Roberts plays you in the film adaptation of your own life.

In this interview, she said something cool: "You don't like it? Go write your own f*cking book. And guess what, you won't. And I did, and that means I won. If you can just *finish* something, you are ten miles ahead of everyone else."

Which naturally, I dug. As you know, I have this theory that it's phenomenally simple to be better than 97% of your competition just by doing. In the case of hunting down your first job (or your next promotion), there are a couple things you can do that will automatically put you in a strong spot.

How I landed a fancy fashion collaboration

September 16, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Exciting news on my front this week. I've been dealing with some turmoil in the tour-planning world, but I got to announce publicly today that I've agreed to a fashion partnership--with the British label Anna Scholz--for my upcoming music video shoot in October.

I'm sure you're now thinking, A fashion partnership? You're in fashion now? What the hell is a fashion partnership? Hold up. You all know I wouldn't just leave you hanging like that. Quick and dirty, here's what happened leading up to me getting to announce this collaboration:

This one is actually mostly for the ladies

September 9, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hello, darlings.

Fall is here, and I'm wearing the new boots to prove it. I have a list *this* long of things to do before I leave for my little US tour in October, but never mind. It's gonna be (mostly) super fun to get it together, and everything should hypothetically go off without major hitches in the end.

Since it's fall, and since I'm wearing new shoes, I thought it was time to talk s-t-y-l-e.

I don't even pretend to be a fashion expert, but I have do have some comments on workplace-appropriate attire. For women, anyways. Men: go get yourself a nice, well-fitting pair of dark wash jeans and some crisp white shirts. Sorted.

Dressing for offices is hard. Business casual is hard. Startup chic is hard. Business dinners are hard. You must perfectly toe the line between no-nonsense professional and sexed-up secretary at any given time.
