How I landed a fancy fashion collaboration

September 16, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Exciting news on my front this week. I've been dealing with some turmoil in the tour-planning world, but I got to announce publicly today that I've agreed to a fashion partnership--with the British label Anna Scholz--for my upcoming music video shoot in October.

I'm sure you're now thinking, A fashion partnership? You're in fashion now? What the hell is a fashion partnership? Hold up. You all know I wouldn't just leave you hanging like that. Quick and dirty, here's what happened leading up to me getting to announce this collaboration:

This one is actually mostly for the ladies

September 9, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hello, darlings.

Fall is here, and I'm wearing the new boots to prove it. I have a list *this* long of things to do before I leave for my little US tour in October, but never mind. It's gonna be (mostly) super fun to get it together, and everything should hypothetically go off without major hitches in the end.

Since it's fall, and since I'm wearing new shoes, I thought it was time to talk s-t-y-l-e.

I don't even pretend to be a fashion expert, but I have do have some comments on workplace-appropriate attire. For women, anyways. Men: go get yourself a nice, well-fitting pair of dark wash jeans and some crisp white shirts. Sorted.

Dressing for offices is hard. Business casual is hard. Startup chic is hard. Business dinners are hard. You must perfectly toe the line between no-nonsense professional and sexed-up secretary at any given time.

The only three books I've read more than once

September 3, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

I'm feeling so back-to-school this week. Autumn is coming, I'm wearing fresh kicks, I got my hair did. Plus, last week, we tore it up for the kick-off Berlin date of #TheHumanJukeboxProject. The show went SO well.

I've gotten a couple compliments recently about how I'm brave to be "pursuing my dreams" and how I "seem to have it more together than the rest of us." First, flattered. I mostly just try to be as honest as I can... and also, let's just chalk a lot of that up to my incredible email skills and strong Instagram game. (Also, never underestimate the value of getting yourself a professional headshot. Seriously, that's career-hack number one.)

But then I thought, there are three huge resources in my life that I can pass onto the rest of you. These are the only three books I've ever read more than once. Which surely reveals something, I guess, considering I was an English major.

All hail the middle ground

August 20, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Strong start to the morning. Just ate a super legit bacon and egg sandwich and there's soul music playing in this cafe-slash-bike-repair-shop place where I am currently sat. I'm in London! Hanging out, doing some work and some play for the week. A bit more work than play, but still. London!

I've had more than a few conversations recently about something I would like to call the middle ground. Naturally, must fill you in.

In the mainstream, college-graduating population of the United States, there seems to be this bizarre anti-spectrum of options when you graduate. On one side, you can get a giant corporate job (I will actually put Google and Facebook and other Tech Giants in this category now). A Grown-Up job. Doesn't matter if you hate it, it's Grown-Up.

The quickest way to improve your resume right this minute

August 12, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Last week, a friend of mine came to me in a crisis. "A recruiter just sent me my dream job. I need to email these people back right away--oh man, I have to update my resume like, right this second. Why is my resume not updated? Oh no..."

Oh no, indeed. Resumes are, as we're all well aware, totally obnoxious. And weirdly personal. A lot of people probably get years and years into their career without anyone seeing their resume aside from a potential employer. (Plug: editing resumes is something I get hired to do from time to time because, you know, I'm weird and enjoy that sort of thing.)

It goes without saying that your resume should always be up-to-date. But I know that me even saying that has caused several of you to flinch. So, instead of reprimanding, please allow me to make your life easier with this one simple trick.
