Beginning to stalk (and approach) a potential employer

July 22, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey friends,

Just home from a meeting with the new producer for #thehumanjukeboxproject, that interactive album I'm recording this summer. Really, really thrilled. Rehearsals start later this month, and I'm going to do my darndest to record all the behind-the-scenes bits for you to scope out.

Last week, a friend of mine came to me for a little bit of help. His GChat began, "Oh, sage wizard of job applications, master of first impressions..." -- so I basically had no other option but to listen.

His situation: He's perfectly happy with his current employment, but is eyeing the cool hardware startup with an office in his neighborhood. His question: How would you go about introducing yourself, and as those Human Resources folk like to say, "starting the conversation"?

Specialize, dear children, until you can't specialize no more

July 22, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Writing you from The Store at Soho House this afternoon. There's vegan food here, and I'm surrounded by terribly expensive designer clothes. It's all vaguely motivating, as I've been feeling a little The Devil Wears Prada.

...And that brings me to today's rant. Friends, there's a big problem. I thought it was just a problem for the fresh-from-college crowd, but I am realizing it's something that we all may need to hear.

Stop, flip it and reverse it

Hey, friends.

I've been a traveling fiend the last couple of weeks (Spain > Chicago > Spain), and I'm finally back. I had to learn a tough lesson during my traveling this time around, which I obviously need to share with you: Give yourself a break, and schedule your off-time into the calendar. Especially if you're on the hustle, job search, or stress-express. Phew.

So. Meanwhile. Back at the ranch. Someone said to me recently, "Your past is just a story you tell yourself." I'd heard this before, but it resonated particularly loudly this time around. As you may have experienced personally, the Tell Us About Yourself portion of an interview or networking event is the most painful for pretty much all people.

The only way to be an expert is to call yourself an expert

May 28, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

I'm running around tying up loose ends before this weekend, when I head off to Spain for some family hang-time, and then straight onto Chicago for some wedding action. It's been utterly brilliant to be in Berlin for so many weeks in a row -- but let's face it, my heart belongs to WH Smith.

Recently, I've been talking a lot about titles. I'm sure you've all heard of imposter syndrome, which is a real and legitimate thing for everybody I know. Whether you're getting a fancy new promotion, starting out on a new career path, or just flat-out starting, you have to decide what you're going to call yourself.

On music and experience and hacking your own skillset

May 20, 2015 Alexa Shoen

Hey, friends.

Me again. Today is the launch day for my (hypothetical!) upcoming album, The Human Jukebox Project. If you click on that link, you can learn all about the project in detail. If you'd like to participate (and vote! and come to a Pop-Up Party!), I am sending you a big, fat thank you for that right this very second.

It's been a musical day all around, for me. Aside from Kickstarting, I also got to rehearse with some super talented musicians for a private party gig we're doing in this crazy, mirrored secret room on Friday night.

I mentioned yesterday that part of the reason I am doing Kickstarter is to gain experience on the platform. It's true. I've hacked my way into a lot of the skills listed on my CV. Here are a couple other examples:
